I don't know from experience, but I was told that in order to make it as painless as possible and avoid infection, you should try to drop one nursing/pumping ever few days to a week, and your body will adjust because you don't "need" the milk as much. It may take a little while, but it's better to go slow so that you don't end up with mastitis - that from what I've heard is an inch from death.
Yeah just decrease feedings...towards the end I did get engorged a bit, but i would just pump a little, just be make it confortable and then stop...don't pump too much or you will defeat the purpose. It takes about a week to completely stop once you stop pumping/nursing...it will end :)
You can also manually express the milk, usually in the shower it helps because your body relaxes. Just not too much or your body will keep on replenishing.
Girl...whatever you do, take your time. I stopped cold turkey. I wore the sports bra, and put cabbage leaves in my bra. (I know it sounds wierd, but it really works!) I didn't have any pain stopping cold turkey, and it was easy. But, about 2 weeks after I stopped, I got mastitis in my right breast! Let me just tell you...it was HORRIBLE!!!! The worse pain I have EVER experienced! It was worse than labor...before I got the epidural. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. I'm not saying I got it because I quit cold turkey, because that's what my doctor advised, but I might've. So, I would take every precaution you can NOT to get mastitis! (can you tell how much pain I was in, just rethinking the memory of it is terrible!!)
Hey girl! How was your first day back at work? I hope everything is going okay. We need more pictuers! Hopefully I'll see you on the 7-8th. We are going to Galveston with the Fine Arts group also. Have a good one.
